On my most recent rewatch yesterday, this is a big part of the realization that I came to as to why OLU asked Julia to spare him.

Having read a lot of negative criticism about how the show told Julia’s story in regards to her being assaulted and how that eventually lead to her gaining her goddess powers from OLU, I’ve watched the series as a whole now at least 20 times and tried to see what it was they were actually going for in their storytelling. I mean, we turn to fantasy to get away from that kind of reality. Absolutely not the best way to handle a story about a rape victim, just taking her power away over and over again and expecting her to pretend to be ok with it until you've reduced her story to everyone around her and her kid.

At least season 5 lampshaded all that with the literal pig, like, the writers were kind of aware, and didn't know how to fix it, so they threw in the pig as kind of an apology joke I think. Julia has to put on a happy face while the world shits on her. Alice got so many what-doesn't-kill-me-makes-me-stronger moments it isn't even funny. Margo got her 'all that glossy armor' episode. It's like, every time she blossoms out of the darkness that surrounds her, the world around her notices and suffocates her even more. And it ended appropriately enough with her baby as her source of power and importance. When they kept taking away Julia's power in the 4th and 5th seasons, until finally the binder took it all, that felt like such a betrayal of her character, especially given what happened in the books. Turning Asmo into Mirana took a lot away from the books and from the gravity of what Reynard had done. In the books she was given a chance to earn her above-all-the-stars rating before her trauma.
